Wind chill calculator.

At 0 °F with a 15 mph wind, the wind chill is −19 °F. Wind chill is how cold the air feels on exposed skin. The NWS formula is defined for air at 50 °F (10 °C) or colder and wind faster than 3 mph.

Enter the air temperature and the wind speed. The calculator uses the National Weather Service formula.

How the calculation works

WC = 35.74 + 0.6215 T − 35.75 V^0.16 + 0.4275 T V^0.16

T = air temperature (°F), 50 °F or colder
V = wind speed (mph), more than 3 mph
  1. Convert the temperature to °F and the wind speed to mph.
  2. Check the limits: 50 °F or colder, and wind faster than 3 mph.
  3. Put T and V in the formula. The result is the wind chill in °F.
  4. Convert to °C if you need it: (°F − 32) × 5/9.

Common questions

What is wind chill?

Wind chill is how cold the air feels on exposed skin. Wind takes heat away from the skin faster than still air. The wind chill is the still-air temperature that would cause the same heat loss.

How do you calculate wind chill?

Use the NWS formula: WC = 35.74 + 0.6215T − 35.75V^0.16 + 0.4275TV^0.16. T is the air temperature in °F. V is the wind speed in mph.

Why is there no wind chill above 50 °F?

The NWS defines wind chill only for air temperatures at or below 50 °F and wind speeds above 3 mph. Outside that range, the calculator shows no value.

When can frostbite happen?

The NWS says exposed skin can freeze in 30 minutes at a wind chill of −19 °F, for example 0 °F air with a 15 mph wind. Colder wind chills are faster: about 10 minutes at −32 °F and 5 minutes at −48 °F. Frostbite needs an actual air temperature below freezing.

How do I convert wind chill to Celsius?

Calculate the wind chill in °F, then convert: °C = (°F − 32) × 5/9. This calculator accepts °C and km/h and does the conversion for you.
